Date: Saturday, October 5th, 2024 Time: around 5:15pm Meal: Dinner Takeaway 1. Thit Nuong: Large ($8) 2. Dac Biet: Small ($4) A friend and I were across the street. I wanted to grab some banh mi before I headed home for myself and the hubby. I adore the fact they do half sandos here, so I typically get a small. Tho if you are buying a bunch, they do buy 4 large get 1 free. But that would have been waaay to much for the two of us. The #2 was delish. A good amount of spread, pate, etc. Cover each bite of the vietnamese sandwich with sriracha and I'm a happy girl. They do pack the veggies separately if you ask, so I suggest doing that if you don't plan on eating it right away. That way, the bread won't get soggy. I'll do that next time since the hubs didn't eat the sando until he next day. There seems to always be a line here and people waiting for their orders. But it all moves fast. Definitely worth the wait tho! REVIEW #3586
Very fast and efficient. Don't expect customer service unless you're Viet. First time here and I had the cold cut combo (#2). I've been to a lot of bahn mi places and this one stands out to my top 3. The other reviews were raving about the bread being soft on the inside, but as my luck would have it... the bread was hard and chewy. I got there at 7:30AM too so I was expecting a pillow lol. I'll be back, but it's not as good as people were saying. Plenty of meat and veggies though. I'm sure the bread is usually really good, but I missed out. So still 4.5 stars. Of course as mentioned, it's grab and go and no inside dining. Very chill atmosphere but once you get in, you gotta decide quick with what you want to grab as the line moves fast. Parking is plentiful, it's a pretty big strip mall.
A big yum. Cemetery picnic. Flying kites. Duc Huong sandwich. Crunchy and tasty. Almost ate the chili but it seemed mild for a 103 degree spot. Brought umbrella for shade.
As many of you know, Duc Huong serves some of the best banh mi sandwiches in San Jose, and they truly live up to the reputation. At this point, I've tried nearly half the menu, and each time I leave satisfied. The bread is perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The meats are always flavorful and never dry--I've enjoyed the cold cuts, Korean BBQ, and pork belly. My personal favorites are the pork belly when I'm in the mood for something hearty, and the cold cuts when I prefer something lighter. The sandwiches are always filled with fresh herbs as well. This location seems to be quicker than the original, but the quality remains top-notch. While the line moves quickly, you might wait up to 20 minutes or more for your sandwich. The shop itself is small, offering a few extra treats like desserts and rice bowls. Once you order, you'll wait outside and listen for your number to be called at the window. The staff is attentive and efficient, although the store's busy flow might make it tricky to catch their attention sometimes. I haven't tried their garlic bread yet, but it seems to be a fan favorite!
For the longest time, I was always dubious as to whether or not Duc Huong really was the best spot in San Jose for banh mi. I had tried a couple of their sandwiches at a friend's place years ago and thought they were just okay - decently filled, but the taste was rather lackluster and, most notably, the bread just wasn't very good. Given that, I always found it hard to believe they were the best of all of the many options around. That is, until I learned that the banh mis we had actually WEREN'T from Duc Huong. Now that I've made my way here (multiple times), I can say with absolute certainty that they really are as good as everyone says! If you should have your own doubts about Duc Huong, one look at the line that you'll inevitably encounter should convince you otherwise. Whether it's in the morning, at the peak of the lunch hour, or the dead of the afternoon, they're well worth the wait. Not only is the menu full of interesting options (both traditional and less traditional), but the smell of freshly baked bread emanating from their kitchen is just intoxicatingly good! Which, needless to say, was the first clear sign how egregious of a mistake it was to confuse the sandwiches here with those mediocre ones I had before! -- (#1) BANH MI THIT NUONG - Grilled Pork...$8 This is my usual measuring stick and it was great! The pork had a really nice char on it yet wasn't the least bit dry, which I feared. What's more, there was a good amount of pork in this too! -- (#4) BANH MI GA BUONG - Grilled Chicken...$8 Ehh. This wasn't bad, but it felt super plain. The chicken was moist enough, but it didn't taste like it had been grilled nor did it taste like it had been seasoned very much. -- (#6) BANH MI XIU MAI - Meatball...$8 While this was surprisingly meaty for a meatball banh mi, this didn't really do much for me. The meatballs were fairly juicy, but I didn't care much for the taste or texture of them (felt a bit "squishy", for the lack of a better term). -- (#12) BANH MI DAI HAN CAI - Spicy Korean Pork...$8 Clearly not all that traditional, but so delicious! The pork was super flavorful and had only just a touch of heat to it. What's more, there was the perfect amount of sauce on it, as it wasn't drowning nor dry. -- (#13) BANH MI BA CHI - Pork Belly...$8 From the picture, I thought this was going to be slices of pork belly, but it was actually chopped. Regardless of the cut, it was hard to get past just how fatty this was. So much so, I could hardly taste any of the seasoning on it. Pass. -- BANH MI BO NUONG - Beef Steak...$10.50 This was awesome! Sure, it's kind of like a cheesesteak, in a way, but the taste of this was akin to like a grilled lemongrass beef or shaking beef. Either way, this is one of my favorite sandwiches, regardless of the price. Considering how not everything I've tried managed to impress, it might seem a little weird to still give so many stars. However, that really speaks to two things in particular - how tasty those good ones were and how awesome the bread is. I cannot stress this enough - the rolls that they bake in-house throughout the day are fantastic! Lightly crusty on the outside yet super soft on the inside. Even after reheating it a day later, it held up super well and tasted (nearly) just as good. Plus, only one of the banh mi I tried was actually below average; the others were fine, just not as good as my favorites. Love that they come in smaller/mini sizes too! FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded up
I always heard about this place through the grapevine specifically for their GARLIC BREAD banh mi!!!! As far as i know this is one of the only places that do this so I HAD to finally try. Definitely mom and pop vibes here. But it gets BUSY, the line was out the door when I came on a Monday night around 6:30pm. No seating inside btw, just order and pickup. I got the grilled chicken and wow the bread was amazing! Very soft, not hard or harsh at all that u might find from other banh mi places. They make their bread fresh!! Def must try when you come to this area at least once!
Was visiting San Jose and wanted to see how the banh mi scene is. I can see why there's a line for this joint. The line although long moved at decent pace. Your nostrils are also treated w the lovely scent of fresh baked bread as you wait. The baguette has almost a cracked exterior and oooh it has a chew w the bite. Meat and veggie are proportionate welcoming a balanced bite. Get your veggies bagged separately if your eating later to avoid the sog. I ordered banh mi cha lua w egg and although this egg was fluffy where I prefer the over easy egg...it was still respectable. Staff was efficient w two registers going. No seating avail so grab and go. Came after noon so they were out of pate chaud which lead me to believe it's a popular item. Will have to see bout that next time round.
ORDER #3 (5/5) the banh mi cha with the garlic butter was so good! they aren't stingy with the toppings and the garlic butter was the perfect addition! SERVICE quick service. AMBIANCE there was a long line, but it moved quickly. the wait for the banh mis was around 30 minutes.
Drove by on a Sunday early afternoon to buy some sandwiches for our family. As usual, there was a line that looked really long but it moved very quickly! We ordered three number 3's (cha lua aka pork meatloaf) and two number 6's (xiu mai aka meatball). Don't worry about getting your sandwiches mixed up because they will mark the wrapper for you. We also ordered three of my other fav banh gio (I think that's what it is called). Finally we got a banh Bo for dessert. All of these goodies cost just under $50. Note that each sandwich was about $8 for the ones we ordered. And when you buy 4 you get one free. I think some sandwiches cost more so you'll need to check the prices. Anyhow, I still think this is a great deal considering it was food for five people. We also had some left over as well! I guess if it is just for one of you. You can get sandwiches for a whole work week to maximize on the buy 4 get one deal. Not sure how it'll hold in the fridge though. And I haven't tried freezing and reheating it though. The taste hit the mark for me. I was also pretty full after the meal and didn't require having any other snacks. :) I definitely recommend this place based mainly on getting a big huge bang for your buck. Also because it will appease your hunger! You can also make your feet happy next door as well. :)
You want to try Duc Huong's. You need to try Duc Huong's. You will crave Duc Huong's. I absolutely love the San Jose location. Ironically, they are their own chain, but independently operated. The San Jose location is far superior to some of the other locations that I've tried. Heads up, my pictures do not do this scrumptious sandwich and justice. The garlic spread on the house made bread is to die for. The bread is the perfect French loaf. A lightly crisp exterior, with a perfectly soft interior, filled with numerous choices of proteins. Pickled and fresh vegetables are an absolute must and tie the entire sandwich together. I've been here numerous times, and I have finally narrowed down my favorite. It's the #1 plus, add extra meat. It's absolutely divine. The meat is perfectly marinated, cooked, and they certainly offer generous portions. Diners tip: buy four sandwiches get one free. I know it sounds excessive, but if you're grabbing sandwiches, like we usually do for an easy evening, it's the perfect reasonably priced and delicious dinner option. The garlic bread is?! You may find yourself standing in line, but the line moves quickly, and it's totally worth the wait. They offer pastries and a variety of other savory treats. All reasonably priced, and all incredibly tasty.
